SEPT 8, 2019: Why Does America Need a Spiritual Revival?

What happens when a Nation Loses its Conscience? When the light barely shines in the darkness? When truth is Obscured by Lies?  These Questions are Answered with: What does America look like in 2019?

  • We are a Nation Adrift…Confused…And in Danger of Completely Losing our Moral Bearings.
  • Where Right is now Wrong and Wrong is now Right. Evil is Celebrated and Virtue is Denigrated.

Today in Americas Churches there is too much Compromise…Too much Carnality. Too much Worldliness. Too much Hypocrisy. And there is Too little Encounter with the Living God.

Here is the Issue for the Church…How can We Change the World if We have Become Like the World?  How can we point people to Jesus when we hardly Resemble Him?

How can we call for Social Transformation when We Haven’t Experienced (or, are not currently walking in) Personal Transformation?

In his book The Signature of Jesus, Brennon Manning made this striking statement: “If indeed we lived a life in imitation of His, our witness would be irresistible. If we dared to live beyond our self-concern, if we refused to shrink from being vulnerable, if we took nothing but a compassionate attitude toward the world, if we were a Counterculture to our nation’s lunatic lust for pride of place, power, and possessions, if we sought to be faithful rather than successful, the walls of indifference to Jesus Christ would crumble. A handful of us could be ignored by society, but hundreds, thousands, millions of such servants would overwhelm the world. Christians filled with the authenticity, commitment, and generosity of Jesus would be the most spectacular sign in the history of the human race. The call of Jesus is Revolutionary. If we implemented it, we would change the world in a few months.”

I want to make very clear that Organized religion is Not the Key…Another New Strategy is Not what We Need…Improved Methodology is Not the Issue.

We need a fresh encounter with Jesus Christ. A Return to Our Knees, to God’s Word, to Holiness, to the Power of the Spirit, to Sharing Our Faith Afresh, to Boldness, to Passion, to Compassion.

True Revival, is a biblical concept. (Isaiah 57:15).  For this is what the high and exalted One says he who lives forever, whose name is holy: “I live in a high and holy place, but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to Revive the Spirit of the Lowly and to Revive the Heart of the Contrite.

In Psalm 85:6-7, the psalmist asks God an interesting question: Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you? Show us your unfailing love, Lord, and grant us your salvation. To be Revived Again implies that there had been a Revival Previously.

The word “revival” means “to Bring Back to Life,” to “Restore to Consciousness,” or to “Restore to a Previous Condition.” It means a Restoration, Rejuvenation, or Renewal of Interest after Spiritual Neglect.

Revival is Not Evangelism, even though many may be revived as a result of it. It is Not Emotionalism, although there may be emotional manifestations connected to it.

What is Revival?  Revival is the Personal Renewal to Spiritual Life in an Individual, or among a Group of People. It is a Heartfelt Return to God and His Commandments.

Revival is needed when the love of God’s people has grown cold. Rev 3:15-17, “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.”

A Symptom of the need of Revival is ComplacencySelf-satisfaction or satisfaction with the status quo. “Seat-warmers” who have a “don’t rock the boat” attitude…Need a spiritual revival.

Some of the Symptoms Include…

  • Lack of concern for the lost and the suffering in the world (1 Cor 10:23). To see or read about all the suffering in the world, and not be moved by it, shows we need spiritual renewal and revival.
  • Hiding or Covering Secret Sins (Numbers 32:23). If we find ourselves covering or excusing our sins, or rationalize, “I will have to change that “Someday,” We Need Spiritual Revival.
  • Having an Unforgiving Spirit (Matt 6:14-15). Some say, “I can forgive, but I can’t forget.” An unforgiving spirit is a strong indication that we need Spiritual Revival.

An Unknown Author said, “We need to forgive and then forget what we have forgiven. We are like beasts when we kill…We are like men when we judge…We are like God when we forgive”.

  • Being Filled with Pride (Proverbs 29:23). We are reminded in  16:18Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall..” Pride and vanity were the cause of Lucifer’s (Satan’s) fall.
  • Animosity Toward Other Christians. It is said that we can pick our friends, but we cannot pick our brethren. A wise quote, We must also overcome the brethren.” Our brothers and sisters in the body.

Any Condition of Spiritual Standing where We are Less than We Were Before is a “backslidden condition.”

It’s two steps back to our old habits of life. If you feel yourself slipping, You Need Spiritual Revival!

NOTE: Often the condition of our hearts is such that we are not aware of our need at the very time it is most needed…We often cover up our inadequacies with a self-deceptive shroud of self-righteousness.

For proof, all we need to do is ask ourselves, “Do I study and pray in ALL my spare time? Or do comfort and cares of the world crowd out that time I could be spending with God?”

It is said that the road to Gehenna (Hell) is paved with good intentions. To have true spiritual revival we must admit that we have a need—and take action.

This is My Hope for each of us at LifePoint this month…That Everyone of Us will Take Action, Commit to Personal Revival.   However, be aware of this week’s Point…
