  • #6 Are the pure in heart, for they shall see God!”
  • #7 Are the Peacemakers…They will be called the sons of God.

If YOU want to grow in God’s Grace and Experience God’s Resurrection Power in Your Lives each day…These 8 Beatitudes are the “Secret Sauce” to God’s Recipe for a Dynamic Christian Life!

Matthew. 5:10-12: “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.  11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you”.

Note how Christ restates verse 10 in verses 11 and 12 and the message becomes first person instead of third person.  The restatement and the personalization suggest that this is of great importance for our individual living as well as for the church universal.

  • WHAT THIS BEATITUDE SAYS…Persecuted Because of… “Righteousness”

God’s is not saying that He blesses those who are being Persecuted for poor decisions, poor use of resources or creating a poor relationship…God Approves Us when we Seek His Righteousness.

You see, the righteousness that God Blesses when persecuted is the righteousness that was taught in the preceding 7 beatitudes…The world cannot tolerate such a life!

  1. Poverty of spirit runs counter to the pride of the unbelieving heart.
  2. The mourning, repentant heart that despises its own sin and the sin of others is not appreciated by this world.
  3. The Gentle and meek person who has the strength to not take up a personal offense is disrespected and regarded as weak by those without Christ.
  4. Hungering and thirsting for the spiritual, for Christ, is foreign and repulsed by a world that lust after the things it can touch and taste.
  5. The truly merciful person who feels and gives compassion and forgiveness, is out of step with a grudge-bearing world and the callousness of the age.
  6. The pure, single-minded heart for God provides a shaming contrast to a culture of ulterior motives.
  7. The peacemaker is hated, because he/she will not settle for a cheap peace.

In verse 11 Jesus says, “On account of Me”…Everyone who lives for Jesus will be persecuted.

John 15:18-20 ““If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. 20 Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’  If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.”

2 Timothy 3:12   “In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted”  Just as they persecuted Christ…They will persecute anyone {You & ME} who claims to live by Christ’s Principles!

We should not be surprised when persecution comes…Rather we should be surprised when it does not come!   Question>>>If You were convicted of being a Christian in a Court of Law… Would there be enough evidence to convict You?!

This Beatitude Begs some Questions:

  • If one has never been rejected for sharing the Gospel of the Kingdom…are they truly citizens of the Kingdom?
  • If we have not been out of step with the culture and suffered its disapproval because we practice the ethics of Gods Children, are we truly Gods Children?

The biggest tragedy to persecution today is not that it happens to believers…But All too often They Do Not!

What keeps Christians from Persecution:

  • We are cut off from the world (100% Christian friends)
  • We keep our Christianity to ourselves. (Fishermen…Must go where the fish are!)
  • The Church has become like the world. {Compromise…Loss of Saltiness}
  • Laugh at the world’s humor…outwardly don’t disapprove of the world’s ethics.
  • Immerse in the world’s entertainment…say nothing when God is mocked…
  • Don’t share our faith.

Matthew 5:12 continues…“Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you”.

Jesus makes it clear in John 16:33 “ “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

You do not even have to be successful at living a godly life for persecution to arise against you for simply the desire to live in righteousness is enough to provoke it.

  • It is not a question of “if” you will be persecuted but rather a question of “when”. So, you need to be prepared for it….HOW DO WE PREPARE FOR PERSECUTION???

POINT: To Prepare for Persecution, We Must Pursue the Characteristics of the Beatitudes

Here’s what I want to leave with You today…The best way to prepare for persecution is to pursue the characteristics of righteousness described in the Beatitudes…But I want You to know that it is those very characteristics that will provoke persecution  from the unrighteous.

As they see Christ in YOU….There will be Mocking…Talking behind Your back…Maybe even causing others to have responses of anger

To integrate the Beatitudes into your life and Live with God’s Approval  will require that We “daily” humble Ourselves before God and receive His grace through faith in the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ !

As You and I do this… the Holy Spirit will transform Us and the characteristics of Christ’s Righteousness will be seen by all who pass our way!
