1 Peter Part 3 HANDOUT
1 Peter 2:13-14 13Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, 14or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right.
Choosing to be set apart includes submission to civil authorities…not because of their inherent goodness.
In verse 13, Peter uses the term hupotasso, which is regularly translated “submit” throughout the New Testament. It reflects a voluntary decision to honor another in a particular way. In no way does submission suggest inferiority of any kind. It’s important to note that Peter’s focus here is not concerned primarily with transforming society. Instead, he is focused on transforming individuals in terms of their relationship with Christ. Those committed to a faithful pursuit of Christ will naturally impact society in a positive way.
The Christians that Peter is writing to don’t have the same freedoms and yet Peter says to submit to human authority…WHY?
- Christians are being mistreated/persecuted
- If anyone had the opportunity to make a compelling argument that they should/could rebel…Peter’s audience would be it.
1 Peter 2:15 15For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.
- The people were being falsely accused
MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO LIVE – live in such a way that as you engage the culture…the prejudices of people won’t hold up. Not only that, but they will be won over by your actions.
We should never follow earthly powers when it goes directly against God’s Word. We prioritize our obedience to God over our obedience to our country. God’s Word is our first allegiance. This is played out in Peter’s life. Acts 5:17-42
1 Peter 2:16 16Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves. 17Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.
1 Peter 2:18-19 18Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to your masters, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh. 19For it is commendable if someone bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because they are conscious of God.
Submit – place yourself under someone by choice and with a happy spirit. You MAKE THE DECISION to submit. This has to come from the heart.
1 Peter 2:21-24 21To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.
22“He committed no sin,
and no deceit was found in his mouth.”
23When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 24“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”
Not easy BUT simple! We are to obey and submit to authority, even when it doesn’t seem fair.
Every day, I must choose to:
POINT: Live holy, love others, learn to submit.
