1 Peter Part 2 HANDOUT8/15/20211 Peter 2:11Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind.Malice - generic term for all wrong/sin - “junk drawer”1 Peter 2:1 MSG - So clean house! Make a clean sweep of malice and pretense, envy and hurtful talk.Living a holy life means getting rid of sin. REPENTANCE language. The Gospel calls us to repent - to get rid of sin.1 Peter 2:2-32Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.Verse 1 - THINGS TO GET RID OFVerse 2-3 - THINGS TO CRAVE
Crave godliness so that you will mature.
Once you have tasted His goodness - it should create a desire for godly living.
KEY: Living a holy life is not just what you get rid of in your life, but what you chase after!1 Peter 2:4-54As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him— 5you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. There is encouragement in these verses, then, in this sense: ‘As you (keep on) coming to Christ (in worship, in prayer and praise), you are (continually) being built up into a spiritual temple, a place in which God more and more fully dwells.More identity language. What we do flows out of who we are. KEY - BEING LEADS TO DOING!1 Peter 2:9-10 9But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. We are to declare His praises - even in the midst of persecutionWe are to tell others of the night and day difference He has made - different than telling someone “You’re wrong, I’m right.” - place of humility - difference God has made in our lives. I used to be this way, but Jesus has made me this way. Humble/vulnerable - this has to be our culture1 Peter 2:11-1211Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. 12Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.1 Peter 2:11-12 MSG 11-12Friends, this world is not your home, so don’t make yourselves cozy in it. Don’t indulge your ego at the expense of your soul. Live an exemplary life among the natives so that your actions will refute their prejudices. Then they’ll be won over to God’s side and be there to join in the celebration when he arrives.POINT: Being leads to doing.God is looking for the faithful, not the perfect, and he is drawing you into spiritual maturity through his Holy Spirit.
