2021.03.07 THESIS: If salvation is completely by grace, and it has nothing to do with our good works, then why do good works?Salvation is not by works, but it always results in dynamic good works. Romans 12:17-21 - combat evil with good! This books will help us understand what good is, and how it transforms lives and cultures.Titus 1:1-5 1 Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ to further the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness— 2 in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time, 3 and which now at his appointed season he has brought to light through the preaching entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior,4 To Titus, my true son in our common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior. 5 The reason I left you in Crete was that you might put in order what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you. Being good and doing good isn’t what makes you right with God. But being right with God will always produce a life that is good. You are a leader. The bar is set higher for elders, we see this in Scripture...BUT - You are the greatest Christian someone knows.Titus 1:6-7 An elder must be blameless, faithful to his wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient. 7 Since an overseer manages God’s household, he must be blameless—not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. Marriage and family (v. 6)
Blameless - “having a good reputation.”
The husband of one wife—One who is devoted to his marriage
Today, this would be revealed in the character of a man. A man that is truly devoted to his wife. What he’s doing when he’s online, or interacting with other people - fantasizing or flirting.
The father of believing children—A father engaged in the intentional discipleship of his children.
Younger children aren’t perfect, but he’s invested in them.
Not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination—Free from the charge of living in a “wild” and “disobedient” manner.
Personality and character traits (v. 7–8)
Not overbearing—Not arrogant
Not a drunkard—Not dependent on any substance that can control you.
Not violent—Not leading through coercion.
Not pursuing dishonest gain—Not leading for unjust or dishonest gain.
Titus 1:8 Rather, he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined.
Hospitable—Care about the people that others don’t care about.
A lover of what is good - We are a product of our thought life.
Private Integrity - who I am when no one is looking.
Self-controlled—Someone who is not driven by their passions.
Upright—Fair and committed to doing what’s right.
Holy—Set apart from the world and fearing what God thinks more than what others think.
Titus 1:9 He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.Titus 3 assignments: Clean up the mess...Teach sound doctrine...Refute false teachersTitus 1:10-16 For there are many rebellious people, full of meaningless talk and deception, especially those of the circumcision group. 11 They must be silenced, because they are disrupting whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach—and that for the sake of dishonest gain. 12 One of Crete’s own prophets has said it: “Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.” 13 This saying is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith 14 and will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the merely human commands of those who reject the truth. 15 To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted. 16 They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.False teachers:
JESUS - Who do they say Jesus is? Fully God and fully Man
GOSPEL - What is the way to have a relationship with God? Grace alone...not grace plus this other thing
BIBLE - What is the authority? Is it the Bible? Do you believe it’s the Bible plus something else?
THE POINT: Christ in me will produce dynamic good works!
