The Invested Life – Good Deeds HANDOUT

6.9.2019

QUESTION: Are you more concerned with your retirement investments or your heavenly investments?

1 Timothy 6:3-10 – False Teachers and the Love of Money

These are the things you are to teach and insist on. If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, they are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.

But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

KEY THOUGHT: Godliness will only be true gain when it is independent of my circumstances.

Philippians 4:11

11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.

KEY THOUGHT: Contentment in the present depends on my belief in the future, which is independent of material things.

INTERESTING FACT: Jesus talked more about money than he did Heaven and Hell combined. Eleven of the 39 parables He tells are about finances. – WHY?  Because money is the number one contender for our heart besides God.

17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 1 Tim 6:17-18

  • God has blessed me with more than I need.  I’m rich. I will not trust in my riches, but in Him who richly provides.

THE POINT: A LIFE INVESTED IN GOD’S KINGDOM LEADS ME TO GIVE MORE AND DO MORE.

KEY THOUGHT:  We are not saved BY good works, but saved FOR good works.

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Eph 2:8-10

**God has equipped you (prepared you) with everything you need, to do every good work He has planned for you!

MY GOOD DEEDS

  • SHOULD POINT TO GOD—NOT ME.

14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Matt 5:14-16

  • MUST HELP OTHERS IN THE WAY THEY NEED IT NOT IN THE WAY I WANT TO GIVE IT.

-STORY – Skip Brown: Delivering Turkeys to families for Thanksgiving.  No Stove.  Bought a stove.

Acts 10:38 New International Version (NIV)

38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.

Truly serving—out of your comfort zone. Extra mile

41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.

Matt 5:41

Roman soldier had the authority to command anyone to carry their gear for 1 mile—1000 steps.

Give a shirt—iron it * Babysitting—clean kitchen & pick up toys

Bring a meal—salad, dessert, paper goods, utensils.

Don’t be poor in good deeds, don’t be middle class in good deeds, be RICH in good deeds.

  • WILL GLORIFY GOD THROUGH HIS CHURCH.

24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another… Heb 10:24-25

When you’re rich in good deeds, you find the life that’s truly life!  Love God Love People Love Life

…And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. Acts 4:33b-34

THE POINT: A LIFE INVESTED IN GOD’S KINGDOM LEADS ME TO GIVE MORE AND DO MORE.
