JULY 23:   HANDOUT Beatitude #6- Matthew 5:8    “Pure in Heart”

BLESSED/APPROVED  8 Beatitudes DNA for Christian Life!

  • Are the Poor in Spirit (Empty Hands)…There’s is the Kingdom of Heaven
  • Are those who Mourn over Sin (Confess)…They will be Comforted
  • Are the Meek/Gentle {Strength under Control}…They will inherit the earth.
  • Are those who Hunger and Thirst after Righteousness…They will be Filled!
  • Are the Merciful, for they shall receive (be shown) mercy.

Today we look at Beatitude #6:  “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God!”

  • The 6th Beatitude is about seeing God. The requirement is to be “Pure in Heart”

William Barclay tells that the Greek word was used of clear water, sometimes metals without alloy or grain that had been winnowed (freed from the mixture of other stuff)   This also includes feelings.  Freed from the mixture of every taint and evil.  It means to be “clean, blameless, and unstained from guilt.”  This does mean pure in mind with regards to sensuality however, the concept goes far deeper than sensual purity of the mind.

A Pure heart does not bring mixed motives and divided loyalties to its relationship with God!   It’s a heart of “singleness in devotion” to God. (Unmixed devotion).  No Division of Loyalty…No Division of Devotion and No Division of Priorities!

James 4:8 “Purify your hearts ye double-minded.”

That is, “Get rid of your mixed motives, your duplicity, your double-mindedness: be simple and pure in your devotion”.  A pure heart has no hypocrisy, no guile, no hidden motives. The pure heart is marked by transparency and an uncompromising desire to please God in all things. You Cannot Love God and the Things of this World equally…God Must Be First!

The depth of what is called for here is seen in the qualifying words, “In Heart”.    We are to be “singly focused” in heart on God.  Heart is the totality of our ability to think, feel and decide.  If our focus is merely intellectual then we are not pure in heart.

In the words of Martin Lloyd-Jones, “Blessed are those who are pure, not only on the surface but in the center of their being and at the source of every activity.

It is from the heart that all our human problems come:

  • Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?
  • In Matthew 15:19 and Mark 7: 21 Jesus said, “For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, greed, envy, malice, slander, arrogance and folly”.

This Depth seems almost “impossible” to reach doesn’t it…So the question is, “How can we ever make it?”

No One can keep the Beatitudes Perfectly… There is only one answer, “We Must Continually Cast Ourselves on the Grace of God and Receive His Radical Renewal!”

Sanctification-Transformation is a work of Grace. Knowing we are Spiritual Beggars and come to Jesus with “empty hands”.  Mourning over our sinful hearts which are the first two Beatitudes we studied.

When we ask Him to implant and nourish the character of the Kingdom in our lives and earnestly obey what He asks they will root and grow within us, even though we will never achieve perfection in this life.

KEY:  It is not what we can believe…It is what we can obey that determines our spiritual destiny!

God asks for a humanly impossible character and then He gives us His character by Grace…Gods Character “Imputed” into Us at Salvation.

The Benefit pf Purity… “They Alone” shall see God.

POINT: The Purer the Heart…The Greater the Vision of God!

Psalm 1 speaks to the difference between the Pure in Heart and those who are not: Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, 2 but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night. 3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers. 4 Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. 6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

The Purer Your heart (The More You Love God with Singleness of Heart) the Greater Your Vision (Understanding) of Him will Be.   As Your Heart becomes Purer…Not Mixed with all the Entanglements of the World… The Greater God’s Word will Come Alive for You!

The only way we can be truly pure in heart is to give our lives to Jesus and ask Him to do the cleansing work. King David understood this…Psalm 51:10 says, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

God is the one who makes our hearts pure – by the sacrifice of His Son and by surrendering to His sanctifying work in our lives daily.
