JUNE 25  Beatitude #3- Matthew 5:5  “The Gentle”

Matthew 5:5 “Blessed are the Gentle (meek) for they shall inherit the earth.”

Gentle/Meek does Not include characteristics such as: indecisiveness, wishy-washiness, lack of confidence, shyness…it doesn’t even mean mere niceness.

Meekness/Gentleness is: _______________  ________  ___________!   The meek person is Strong!  He is gentle, meek and mild, but he is in control!

Matt 11:29 Jesus said, “I am gentle (meek) and humble in heart.” (Jesus showed it two ways…both of which show His power.)

Christ practiced neither retaliation nor vindictiveness.  When mocked and spat upon He answered nothing. When confronted by Pilate, He kept quiet.  When His friends fled and betrayed Him, He uttered no reproach. When Peter denied Him, Jesus restored Him.  When Judas kissed Him in the garden to betray Him, Jesus called him friend, and He meant it! (Jesus was never insincere).  On the cross Jesus cried to His Father and said, Father Forgive Them!

  • Luke 23:34…In all of this Jesus was meek and mild however, He was in Control!

Yet, when it came to matters of faith and the welfare of others Jesus Lashed Out!   He rebuked the Pharisees’ hardness of heart Matt 12:9-45. He was angered when His disciples tried to keep the little children from coming to Him Mark 10:13-16. Jesus made a whip & drove the money changers from the temple John 2:14-17.  In Matthew 16:21-23 Jesus called Peter Satan after the outspoken fisherman tried to deter Him from His Heavenly Mission.  (This is the epitome of Meekness.)

From this we see that the one who possesses Meekness and Gentleness:   Has a ___________ spirit…there is a caress about his presence.

  • Extends _________ instead of _________________ against those who do “him” evil.
  • Stands up fearlessly in ______________of others or of ________ __________!

Gentleness is a _____________ __________ with a _______   ______________.    It is a tender, compassionate approach toward others’ weaknesses and limitations.

  • A gentle person still speaks truth, sometimes even painful truth, but in doing so guards his tone so the truth can be well received. Unfortunately, too many people equate gentle with weak.

KEY: Gentleness is a strong hand with a soft touch…A gentle person speaks the truth in a way others can receive…True followers of Christ are distinguished by gentleness.

POINT: “Let your gentleness be evident to all.” Philippians 4:5

The Promise for thos Meek and Gentle…“They shall inherit the earth.”

In Psalm 37…6 times the Lord encourages His people. (Vs 9, 11, 18, 22, 29 & 34)

The time is coming when we will ____________ with Christ as fellow _________ (Rom 8:17)

  • We will reign with Christ in His earthly Kingdom…We will inherit the earth!
  • The paradox is that the we (The Meek) will be fulfilled beyond our wildest dreams!

There are four things that we can do to acquire Christ like Meekness:

  1. We must realize that a gentle, caressing spirit is a _________of the Holy Spirit. (Gal 5:5 For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope ) and it comes only through __________…God Dwelling in Us.

  1. The Beatitudes provides the 3 step ladder to meekness.
  • The initial step begins in the first beatitude with poverty of spirit. We realize we are spiritually_________________ and cannot please God within ourselves.
  • The second step is found in the second beatitude which is “_______________”. We truly lament our state of spiritual poverty/sinful condition.  And God is pleased and we are blessed/approved.

These two first steps may seem negative however when accomplished they make way for a very positive virtue of meekness.

Martyn Lloyd-Jones defined Meekness to his congregation in the Westminster chapel this way, “The man who is truly meek is the man who is amazed that God and man can think of him as well as they do and treat him as well as they do”.

  • The test to meekness is, “Not whether we say we are poor sinners, but rather what we do when someone else calls us vile sinners!”

Prayer is the 3rd ingredient to obtain a spirit of meekness.  We must pray for it as we cannot bestow it upon ourselves. We must YOKE ourselves to Jesus

  • Jesus said, “Take My Yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle in spirit and humble in heart: and My load is light.” (Matt 11:29-30)
  • Jesus promises us that if we yoke ourselves to Him, as a young ox was yoked to an older more experienced ox so that the older might train him to perform properly, so we too will learn gentleness and meekness by being yoked to Jesus.
  • This takes surrender to Jesus 24/7/365…There is nothing more difficult than fighting/pulling against the one to whom you are yoked!

Gentle/Meek Christians Must Rise Above ____________________Christianity.

  • We must not fall into the trap that adhering to good manners and proper social conventions fulfill the meekness that God has called for in this beatitude.

Others need to see gentleness and a non-retaliatory spirit in us.  When they do…they will see Jesus!
