See a Victory

5.3.20

“Worship is a powerful weapon. And ‘See A Victory’ has become one of those songs I’ve put in my own armory when I’m in the middle of a battle,” says Chris Brown of Elevation Worship. “When I choose praise over fear, even in the face of overwhelming odds, I can trust that God is fighting my battles for me and that He’s turning things around for my good and His glory.”

1 Peter 5:6-11 New International Version (NIV)

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. 11 To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Peter is writing to the a group of believers, scattered throughout Asia Minor

Praise in verse 11 – Infectious confidence in God’s plan

We’re going to see a victory – even though it’s dark, Jesus has the victory

It’s always too soon to quit/give up hope

While we are in a time of hardship, that’s when the devil comes in with his lies

John 8:44 New International Version (NIV)

44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

If we believe the lies, we are open to his destruction

The enemy has to ask God to bring a trial against you – Satan can’t do anything to us that God doesn’t allow – we already have the victory.

We are masters of self sabotage – Satan has to check with God, but we can do it to ourselves.

The lies of satan lead to deception and that deception leads to our destruction when we buy into those lies.

Truth from 1 Peter

LIE #1 You have something to prove – make something of yourself

  1. Pride causes us to err – root of all sin

  2. 1 peter 5:6 – humble yourselves

  3. God already proved His love for you

KEY: When you are listening to God’s voice – you don’t have to prove anything to anyone.  God proved His love so we don’t have to prove anything.

God takes us through trials to prepare us for more in life.  We can’t skip those steps and go right to the next step.

1 Peter 5:5

5 In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,

“God opposes the proud

but shows favor to the humble.”

LIE #2 You won’t make it through this – worry

I Peter 5:7

7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

God works in our life in a powerful way – He uses it in your life and purposes it for good.

LIE #3 God doesn’t care about you

Pastor once said – “Devil says, there is no God, AND He doesn’t care about you!” – The devil doesn’t have to make sense when he’s lying.

Truth – God is madly in love with you

If God gets you through it, He can get others through it.  Others need your to see your faithfulness

I Peter 5:9

9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

LIE #4 You can relax now – you’ve gone through pain, worry, etc.

Don’t let your spiritual guide down

I Peter 5:10

10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.

KEY: You’re never more vulnerable than in victory

KEY: We can never get to the point where we stop passionately following Jesus.

“See A Victory” (Elevation Worship):

The weapon may be formed but it won’t prosper

When the darkness falls it won’t prevail

Cause the God I serve knows only how to triumph

My God will never fail

I’m gonna see a victory

For the battle belongs to You Lord

There’s power in the mighty name of Jesus

Every war He wages He will win

I’m not backing down from any giant

I know how this story ends

You take what the enemy meant for evil

And You turn it for good

You turn it for good

POINT: I’m gonna see a victory – for the battle belongs to You Lord.
